Work Done

In these few years from inception, our small team was able to take up many activities to help educate underprivileged children.

Some of the activities that we have taken up are as follows:

  • Assistance to students
  • Assistance to schools
  • Social Service
  • Assistance in preparation for competitive exams

Kodagu Education & Social Service Trust (KESST)
- Report for 2022-23 (April 2023)

The year 2022-23 was a year of recovery after COVID, and life re-commenced with a degree of near normalcy.

Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life:
In the financial year 2022-23, KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 21,29,234 /- to support 122 children, of which 63 are girls, 8 are orphans being cared for by grandparents or other relatives, and 109 have mothers as a single parent. In addition, two girls, one in IAS coaching and one in B.Sc Nursing were given financial support of Rs 1,51,930/-.

Sainik School Coaching (for academic session 2023-24):
Coaching for Entrance for Class 6 was conducted from 1st June 2022 to 5th January 2023 at Lions School, Gonikoppal with 15 students attending the coaching. In addition, 6 students were coached for Class 9 entrance in Lions School premises in the evening after school hours. Expenditure covering remuneration for teachers and study material was Rs 5,39,000 /-. With the great effort of the teachers, the children qualified for the examination. However, their marks were not sufficient to earn a position on the merit list. For the next examination, it is planned to solicit greater participation from the parents to ensure better results.

Awareness for Career Options in Defence:
Many youths were counseled and guided in one-on-one sessions.

Coaching for Army Jawan Physical and Written Test:
After COVID, the Armed Forces have only opened the Agniveer mode of recruitment. Candidates are required to register online and are called up for further tests as per the cut-off. Free coaching camps for Agniveer were held in October 2022 in Kushalnagar (22 candidates) and Gonikoppal (10 candidates). Out of the 32 candidates five qualified. The total expenditure was Rs 52,500 /-.

Youth Visit Program to Anantnag, Kashmir – August 2022:
KEEST arranged for a group of scholarship beneficiaries (students) to stay in an Indian Army unit in Anantnag, Kashmir from 11-17 August 2022. In Kashmir, the students interacted with local youth and showcased traditional Kodava folk dances. On the return, they did some sightseeing in Delhi. This was the first trip of the children out of Karnataka state and they benefited in the expansion of their vision and understanding of the nation.

Another batch comprising students of Lions School, Gonikoppal, and Coorg Public School (COPS), Gonikoppal were hosted by an Indian Army unit in Anantnag, Kashmir from 17-24 AUG 2022, as part of the Youth Exchange programme and civilian outreach of the Indian Army.

The expenses of the students were funded by the army and KESST coordinated in identifying and selecting the students and also facilitated administrative support to the students.

Coaching for Central and Civil Services Examination:
Two youths, one girl and one boy, have been identified and are being supported on a long-term basis of not less than two years, to prepare for Central and State Civil Services Examinations. Their fees for coaching institutions, board and lodging, and pocket expenses are being catered for. Expenditure covering coaching fees, PG, and other expenses was Rs 53,130/-

KESST Office at Virajpet:
KESST office in the old Virajpet Kodava Samaja office building, adjoining Triveni School is fully functional. The office is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays and state government holidays.

Administrative Expenses 2021-22:
In keeping with the tenets of KESST, administrative expenses have been managed at 4 % of the annual expenditure.

Appeal for contributions for 2023-24

Support for Education and Basic Quality of Life:
In the financial year 2022-23 KESST has incurred an expenditure of Rs 21,29,234 /- In 2023-24, it is expected that the outgo would be approximately Rs 25 lakhs for 150 children. It is also planned to enhance the digital readiness of selected older children by gifting them well-configured new laptops with internet connectivity. The anticipated cost is Rs 5 lakhs.

Coaching for Entrance for Class 6 was conducted from 1st June 2022 to 5th January 2023 at Lions School, Gonikoppal with 15 students attending the coaching. In addition, 6 students were coached for Class 9 entrance in Lions School premises in the evening after school hours. Expenditure covering remuneration for teachers and study material was Rs 5,39,000 /--. Anticipated expenditure for the exam in Jan 2024 is expected to be around Rs 6 lakhs towards salaries of teachers and study material.

Coaching for written exam for Army Jawan entrance (Agnipath Program):
Free coaching camps for Agniveer were held in October 2022 in Kushalnagar (22 candidates) and Gonikoppal (10 candidates). Out of the 32 candidates five qualified. The total expenditure was Rs 52,500 /-. Anticipated expenditure for 2023-24 is a total of Rs 1 lakh for both locations.

State level cross country Race for Youth Eligible for Joining Defence Force at Kushalnagar (Kodagu):
In the second half of 2023, KESST along with Kushalnagar Ex-Servicemen Association will be organizing the 2nd State Level Cross Country Race at Kushalnagar to create awareness for candidates for entry to armed forces for both boys and girls. Expenditure covering prizes and other expenses in 2021 (the event was not held in 2022) was Rs 46,150/-. For the event in 2024, the anticipated expenditure for prizes and other expenses is Rs 2 lakhs.

Free Coaching for Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC):
The schedule of UPSC exams for 2023-24 is given below. It is planned to conduct similar coaching sessions depending on the response after applications are invited. The planned budget for the coaching is Rs 1 lakh.

Coaching for Central and Civil Services Examination:
Two youths, one girl and one boy, have been identified and are being supported on a long-term basis of not less than two years, to prepare for Central and State Civil Services Examinations. Their fees for coaching institutions, board and lodging and pocket expenses are being catered for. Expenditure covering coaching fees, PG and other expenses was Rs 53,130/- as one aspirant prepared from home due to health conditions in the PG. The assistance will be extended in 2023-24 also and is likely to cost approximately Rs 2 lakhs.

Improving/Enhancing Livelihood by Supporting Self-Help Groups (SHGs):
KESST has planned to make a foray into improving/enhancing livelihood by supporting SHGs in remote areas. Assistance to the tune of Rs 5 lakhs is planned.

Our anticipated budget for 2023-24 is Rs 47 lakhs. Of this amount, the Trust has reserve funds and is looking to raise around Rs 35 lakhs to meet expenditure in 2023-24. Your contributions, however small, would go a long way in assisting KESST to support children in the programs listed above.
